Required Equipment:

    Large pot for boiling cabbage
    Mixing bowl
    Large skillet or frying pan
    Baking dish
    Aluminum foil
    Cooking twine or toothpicks

European Cabbage Rolls – Instructions:

Prepare the Cabbage:

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head.
Place the cabbage in the boiling water, and gently peel off the softened outer leaves one by one, placing them on a clean towel to drain. Repeat until you have about 12 leaves.
Prepare the Filling:

In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, uncooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, milk, salt, pepper, paprika, dried thyme, and dried oregano. Mix thoroughly.
Assemble the Cabbage Rolls:

Take one cabbage leaf and place a portion of the filling at the base of the leaf.
Roll the cabbage leaf, folding in the sides, to create a tight bundle. Use toothpicks or cooking twine to secure if needed. Repeat for all leaves.

Cook the Cabbage Rolls:

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
Add the cabbage rolls and cook until they are browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.
Prepare the Tomato Sauce:

In a separate saucepan, combine tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
Bake the Cabbage Rolls:

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Place the browned cabbage rolls in a baking dish and pour the tomato sauce mixture over them.
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour, or until the cabbage leaves are tender.

Serve:

Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Useful Tips:

Cabbage rolls have a rich history across Eastern and Central Europe, with variations in each region. Experiment with different fillings and seasonings to discover your favorite flavor profile. Serve these delicious rolls with a dollop of sour cream or yogurt for added creaminess. Pair them with a simple salad or crusty bread to complete your European-inspired meal.

Enjoy your European Cabbage Rolls, a hearty and flavorful dish that transcends borders and brings the taste of old-world Europe to your table.
